Mortgage broker Karen O’Brien has discovered that a picture’s worth a thousand words when she wants to thank her loyal customers.
When someone uses her Sussex Mortgage Centre to arrange their lending, they now receive a free portrait photograph from Steve Gubbins, the award-winning photographer based in Warnham, West Sussex.

“It was when I had a portrait of myself for my business that discussions started with Steve about this lovely, glamorous way to say thank you to my loyal customers,” Karen explained. “In this current climate and with so much competition in the world of mortgages, I wanted to find a fresh way to thank my longstanding customers. I used to send a letter but have been giving away portraits for the last six months.
“My customers have all been very pleased with the pictures. I am hoping that when they look at the portrait they will remember me and use me again next time,” Karen added.
The Shopland family in Burgess Hill has been a loyal customer of Sussex Mortgage Centre for many years. The family was delighted with their special thank you gift after remortgaging this time round.
“A family portrait was something we had been thinking about for a year or so but had never really got round to it, says Jim Shopland. (Jim is pictured with wife Jane, daughter Esther and one-year old Gemma the dog).
”I was a bit apprehensive and not really looking forward to the shoot but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Steve’s studio. Steve made us all feel very relaxed – I even found myself enjoying the experience.
“He showed us family pictures he had taken previously. We really liked the ones with the family dogs in although we hadn’t brought Gemma with us on this occasion. Jane took Gemma along on a separate occasion to have her photographed but Steve used his expertise to superimpose the dog on to one of the pictures he had previously taken of the three of us. Amazing, you would never know.
The family portrait is due to take pride of place at home, Jim adds. “We’re going to hang it in our new extension once it is finished and we’ve also bought pictures for the grandparents. I was delighted with the service Steve gave and I feel that he managed to capture all our personalities. A pleasurable and enjoyable experience and I would definitely use Steve again.”
Steve has almost 30 years’ experience in photography and holds two European Kodak Gold Awards. His reputation has been built on being able to capture a client’s personality.
